After almost 50 years in medicine, respected Castle Hill GP Dr Robert Elliott is retiring, bringing to a close an extraordinary career dedicated to caring for generations of local families across the Hills District.

Dr Elliott’s journey into medicine was anything but traditional. Leaving school at just 15 years of age, his first job was stacking shelves at a supermarket before beginning a five-year apprenticeship as an electrician. As part of his apprenticeship, he attended what was then known as “Tech”, now TAFE, one day a week for four years to study electrical theory.

Determined to further his education, he attended night school during the final years of his apprenticeship, completing the Diploma Entrance course. By the age of 21, Bob had become a qualified electrician and successfully completed his Higher School Certificate.

It was then he discovered his true calling.

He enrolled in Medicine at the University of NSW, graduating with his MBBS in 1975. Following more than two years working at Sydney Hospital, Dr Elliott travelled to the United Kingdom with his young family, where he spent over a year working in hospitals in Plymouth and South London.

Upon returning to Australia, he joined a two-doctor practice in Castle Hill, where he worked for nine years before helping establish the original Castle Hill Medical Centre on Old Northern Road in 1987 alongside several other Hills-based practices.

Nearly four decades later, only two of the original doctors remain practising at the centre, a testament to the longevity and commitment of Dr Elliott’s career.

Throughout his time in medicine, Dr Elliott became widely respected not only for his patient care but also for his contribution to the wider medical profession. He served as an examiner and tutor for the FRACGP examination and was heavily involved with the Western Sydney Division of General Practice, first as a Board Member and later as President.

His passion for caring for vulnerable patients led him to undertake specialist training in Palliative and End of Life Care, allowing him to support both patients and the local palliative care nursing team in home settings.

Dr Elliott also gained accreditation within the Opioid Treatment Program, enabling him to prescribe methadone to patients battling addiction — an area of medicine requiring great compassion and commitment.

Well known for going above and beyond for his patients, he has remained one of the few local doctors still willing to make house calls and visit nursing homes, continuing a style of personal care many believe has become increasingly rare in modern medicine.

Away from work, Dr Elliott and his wife Nancye, whom he has been married to for more than 50 years, have shared a love of travel and adventure. Over the years he has travelled extensively, often independently serving as the medico for trekking groups.

His travels have taken him to destinations including India, Turkiye, China, Egypt, Chile, Tibet, Bhutan, Papua New Guinea, Ethiopia, Japan, Namibia, Botswana and throughout Central Asia and the Himalayas.

Despite a demanding medical career, Dr Elliott has also maintained a passion for health and the arts, enjoying running, yoga and kayaking. For many years he has sung with the Sydney Philharmonia Choir and is often found performing on the stage of the iconic Sydney Opera House.

As Dr Elliott steps into retirement, he leaves behind not only an impressive professional legacy, but also the gratitude of countless Hills families whose lives he has touched over almost half a century of dedicated service.
