Fans of classic British television comedy are in for a treat when Richmond Players present the much-loved stage adaptation of Are You Being Served?
Based on the iconic sitcom, the production follows the quirky staff of the fictional Grace Brothers department store as they navigate workplace dramas, interpersonal relationships and the daily challenges of retail life. The show cleverly parodies Britain’s class system, with characters typically referred to by their surnames and titles rather than their first names.
Packed with humour, Are You Being Served? delivers a continuous stream of laughs through witty misunderstandings, mistaken identities, farce, sight gags and occasional slapstick. Famous for its cheeky innuendo and double entendres, the play is a nostalgic snapshot of 1970s Britain and the comedy that made the television series a household favourite.
Rehearsals are well underway, with an experienced, dedicated and enthusiastic cast eager to bring this hilarious production to life for both loyal Richmond Players patrons and first-time theatre-goers.
The action begins on the familiar sales floor of Grace Brothers before moving, courtesy of the generous Young Mr Grace, to the one-star Don Bernardo Hotel in Spain, where some suitably “revolutionary” adventures unfold.
So, if you’re ready to answer the famous call of “Are You Free?”, make your way to the Richmond School of Arts next month for an evening of laughter and entertainment.
